History
of DH WILSON AND SONS
DH
WILSON AND SONS
DH
WILSON AND SONS was founded by Donald H. Wilson in 1897. Spotting
an opening in the local fishmongery market, Donald moved to set
up shop in Formby with his wife Elize, and were soon in high demand.
In the early years, Donald was keen to boast of his "23 types
of fish for sale!" an impressive claim that the competitors
couldn't match!! And word spread that DH WILSON FISHMONGERS (as
it was known then) was the only place to buy fresh fish in the
Formby area.
Donald
Wilson retired in the 1920's, but not before handing the shop
over to his sons John and Charles (or Charlie to everyone who
knew him). Sadly Donald and Elize's third son, Michael, hadn't
made it back from the trenches of the great war. It was then that
the shop become know as "DH WILSON AND SONS". John and
Charlie were as popular with the people of Formby as their father
had been, especially Charlie, who was quite well known around
the area for his high-spirited antics (often around last orders!).
Charlie eventually married a southerner and moved to London just
before the outbreak of WWII, leaving the running of the business
to John Wilson, who had always been thought of as the reliable
one..
And
through another few generations, the shop remains in the family,
run by Hugo Sylvian, married into the family via Sandra Wilson
(now Sandra Sylvian, obvious!). And hopefully will stay a family
run business for years to come !!!

More
history to come - part 2, WWII and beyond!
